Barbara Astman, Collage #12 (from the series Daily Collage), 2011 |
Barbara Astman is joined by an illustrious list of artists in
the exhibition Freedom of Assembly at Oakville Galleries, 24 June – 2 September
2012.
The series Daily Collage by Astman developed out of an
ongoing habit of reading the daily news and an interest in the visual imagery
of news worthy articles.
Freedom of Assembly brings together recent works by eighteen Canadian artists that cohere under a broad assessment of this impulse. While vastly different in styles and agendas, the artists assembled here share exuberance about experimenting with form, content and material. Drawing on the stuff of our everyday lives—including newspapers, books and readily available scrap—these artists fracture, transform and regenerate images and forms to open, often provocative ends.
Exhibiting artists include: Roy Arden, Barbara Astman, Valérie Blass, Paul Butler, Sarah Cale, Aleesa Cohene, Jason de Haan, Georgia Dickie, Marcel Dzama, Geoffrey Farmer, Kristan Horton, Tiziana La Melia, Luanne Martineau, Jennifer Murphy, Jacob Whibley, Alison Yip, Balint Zsako, and Elizabeth Zvonar.
